Running in Prague

One of our favorite things to do in a new city is to explore by running off the "beaten path." While our run in Vienna was pretty cool (we took one of the photos of the Hundertwasser Haus on that run), the run in Prague was particularly amazing. We explored Mala Strana (a park which I think means, rather unjustly, "The Lesser Side") which only was a few blocks from our apartment. Entering the gates of the park, we immediately ascended - on a combination of stairs, switchbacks, and steep hills - up a couple of hundred feet where we then zig-zagged inside & outside of the various medieval castle walls that divide the park into sections. A few clearings in the forest here and there afforded some magnificent views of the city. Otherwise, while deeper in the trees, the fog and the almost eery silence and emptiness of the park made it possible to imagine that we were traveling through a medieval forest. Fortunately not, as our discovery running with bright jackets and rubber shoes would surely get us branded witches and burned at the stake....

Susan: Fastest American... in Hungary

Susan ran the Coca Cola Women's 10k this morning - her 2nd Hungarian race thusfar. She did awesome - the first finisher from the Western Hemisphere! Using that logic, she beat half the planet. Furthermore, not a single man beat her.





She took 3rd overall and was given all kinds of prizes in addition to 16,000 forints. Now don't burst her bubble by figuring out the exchange rate (it's really about $80).

Brewers Make Playoffs!

First time in 26 years! And I am in Hungary. I must have been a jinx.

It may be another 26 years before they make it back so I'm staying up for the games (tonight's game starts at midnight here).

[UPDATE: The Brewers bowed out of the playoffs after just 4 games. But, I think most Brewers fans are just happy they lived long enough to see the Brewers make the playoffs again - especially after their late-season collapse. They at least won one playoff game (unlike the team to the south - sorry Siegel).

Yet, a part of me wonders what if? What if Ben Sheets didn't get injured (again)? What if some of their best players hadn't forgotten how to hit (Corey Hart) the last month of the season? What if they hadn't fallen apart forcing them to wear out CC Sabathia the last month of the season? But as they say, if "ifs" and "buts" were candy and nuts we'd all have a merry Christmas.]

That means there are 3 smart people. Yes, I voted for "Never, Ever" but only once (I tried to vote again but the evil blog-master wouldn't let me). The rest of you have a) no understanding of how fast a man can run when driven by fear, and b) how shrewd I can be. When Susan was doing 5k's I did marathons. When she did marathons, I did 50k's. If she ever does a 50-miler, I'll do 100's. If she does 100's - well I'll take up golf. The only mistake I made was running a 50k on a hot day against her. Our marriage was in peril like never before.

Fortunately, a heroic finish by yours truly saved our marriage. Ask yourself, would Susan do that for me? Think about it....

Sightseeing in Budapest

As time, money, and health allows (I have been sick 3 times and Susan once in the 4 weeks we have been here), Susan & I have tried to make some short sight-seeing trips to various places of interest in Budapest.

2 weeks ago we visited City Park, one of the largest parks in the city. We arrived just in time to watch the finish of the half-marathon. We pitied the runners staggering to the finish as it was quite hot.

This guy found a revolutionary way to keep track of his small dog in large crowds: tie a balloon to the dog. The balloon is labelled "GPS."

Budapest weather is a lot like the Midwest - highly varied and unpredictable. The weekend of the marathon the temperature reached the high 90's. It also was the high season for weeds in Hungary. So add the weeds, the heat, and the smog, and I suffered from allergies more so than I ever have before. Making it seem worse is the fact that my allergies were almost non-existent in the arid climate of New Mexico. But, back to sight-seeing....

That same weekend we climbed to Castle Hill and visited "The Labyrinth" which was a series of caves found underneath Castle Hill that now serve as a spooky art gallery. I thought it was going to be hokey, but it actually still is one of my favorite stops in Budapest so far. It also was a perfect place to be on that hot weekend - cool and no allergies.

Watch your head (not you Susan...)

Since that weekend, the temperature has plummeted to the 50's (40's at night - fahrenheit of course). I think we skipped fall altogether.

Last weekend - no sightseeing. I was sick. Again.

But, this weekend I feel good (Susan is sick).

Yesterday, we finally found some real trails. Previously we had tried running to the Buda Hills, but by the time we reached the trails and got off the pavement we had to turn around and head back home. This time we took a bus 3/4 of the way there and then ran in the hills for about an hour and a half before making the 45 minute run back to the city (2 hr 15 min - longest run in Europe so far).

At the height of our run we reached Janos Peak which is the highest point in Budapest at 527 m (1750 ft?). Snapped a few pictures at the top of Janos Tower amongst a hoard of kids before vertigo, claustrophobia, and the bitter cold winds drove us back down the stairs.

Night-time Race (6.5km) - Susan & I signed up for this race. I got sick that weekend, but we showed up anyway and just jogged it. If I wasn't sick and we were in shape this would have been a very fun race to compete in.
